Description
The Warlis believe that with the marriage of two souls all living things are fertilized and re-energized into creativity. The long process of marriage rituals, designed, as it is to affect creation is carefully observed according to a convention. The painting of a Marriage Chawk is one of the most important aspects. The raw canvas is smeared with cow dung and mud over which acrylic is used to do the imagery. After coating, the first element is the Chaukat/Caukat(the square), which comes on the raw canvas. The chawk is drawn in the houses of both the bride as well as the groom. Here is an artwork full of delight and no trace of gloom. In Warli tribes, Palghat is the marriage God. On the day of marriage bride and groom seek blessings from Goddess Palghat Devi. Interestingly Anita Balu Mashe has depicted the offering to the Goddess which includes a ladder hence denoting that one step at a time is a key to a successful married life.
