Description
The Warlis believe that with the marriage of two souls, all living things are fertilized and re-energized into creativity. The long process of marriage rituals, designed to affect creation, is carefully observed according to convention. The painting of a Marriage Chawk is one of the most important aspects. The raw canvas is smeared with cow dung and mud, over which acrylic is used for the imagery. After coating, the first element is the Chaukat/Caukat (the square), which is drawn on the raw canvas. The chawk is drawn in the houses of both the bride and the groom. In this artwork, full of delight and devoid of gloom, the chawk is depicted between two trees. In Warli tribes, Palghat is the marriage god. On the day of marriage, the bride and groom seek blessings from Goddess Palghat Devi. Interestingly, Sarita Suresh Banjara has depicted an offering to the goddess, which includes a ladder, symbolizing that one step at a time is key to a successful married life.
