Description
The roots of Warli paintings can be traced back to the ancient times of the Warli tribe, who inhabit the mountainous and coastal areas of Maharashtra. This tribal art form, which dates back to the 10th century, was traditionally practised by the women of the community. Using basic white pigment made from rice flour and water, these women would create intricate scenes on the mud walls of their homes, capturing moments from their agrarian lifestyle, religious ceremonies, and folktales. The Warli paintings are characterized by their distinct style ? monochromatic hues, triangular and circular patterns, and the absence of straight lines. These elements not only add a rustic charm to the paintings but also symbolize the harmonious relationship between nature and the Warli community.
