Madhubani Art: The Timeless Beauty of Sacred Hues

Madhubani art painting, also known as "Mithila painting", is practised in the state of Bihar and the Mithila region of neighbouring Nepal. Although having a folkish visual idiom, the splendid use of colour and spatial composition lend them a superior aura. Of religious nature and ritualistic connotation, Madhubani paintings can trace their origin to wall paintings mentioned in Hindu oral traditions. Many other motifs and themes derived from nature-based belief systems have been assimilated over time. The madhubani art is the outcome of domestic and ritual activity, women artists have been the backbone that has sustained this artistic tradition over centuries.
