Lipai Art: The Artistic Evolution of Lipai Kaam

The Lipai art is a form that has a hoary past and no records to trace its origin. Various tribal and rural communities do mud-washing in their distinct style. Artisans of each community practising this art form stick to graphic and eye-catching geometric patterns of Lipai Kaam. It depicts the human or animal forms. Clay deposits found naturally in India created a rich culture of clay work all over the country. The tradition of clay craft concentrated on terracotta ware and lipai. Also, it is a practice of plastering the walls of homes seasonally with a mixture of clay and dung. It is a technique which transformed Lipai Kaam into an art form. On the one hand, it created possibilities for the performativity of self-expression. It also prompted the setting up of this art on the global platform.
