Bengal Scroll Art: Pattachitra about Mythology and Ancient Narratives

The traditional Pattachitra or Bengal Scroll is a rolled-up painting painted on clothes. It is composed of a name; Pattachitra is a Sanskrit term made from two words that is Patta means cloth while Chitra means picture. The main subject of this painting is Hindu mythological narratives, scenes from religious texts, folktales and native elements. Pattachitra paintings are practised in eastern Indian states such as West Bengal and Odisha. The Bengal pattachitra paintings are characterized by creative and traditional motifs/designs, decorative borders, and bright colour applications. The outline of the figures and motifs are bold and sharp. Some common motifs seen in these paintings are of flora and fauna. The artists of Odisha and Bengal still use the traditional method of painting to give a unique look to it altogether.
