Patachitra or scroll paintings of Bengal is an ancient art form that usually features a long vertical multi panelled scroll with a continuous narrative. It is one of the oldest pictorial arts that is linked to performance, which is still practiced in different communities in India. It is an artistic device employed to propagate and keep alive many oral and written epics. The painter-performer will travel with these scrolls and narrate stories to rapt audiences while the pata gives them a visual cue.
