KALIGHAT PAINTING. The man and the woman seem to be restless and pensive after a quarrel or romantic fall out. Their costumes are
worthy of a second glance. Both of them are dressed in modern clothes. The man is sporting a blue shirt with crisp popped colours and white pants. He is even wearing an earring and his features are rendered with prominent strokes. Similarly, the woman is wearing a oneshouldered
draped garment, possibly a sari. She is bejewelled with ornaments depicted in red and white. Both of them seem lost in a world of their own as if visiting memories from days gone by. Other than their intimate placement together, they both seem distant and in their own worlds. It is interesting to note that the couple isn't shown in an active interaction which is generally the case with Kalighat paintings of a man and woman. Possibly they are deep in a loving dreamlike conversation. Either way, the scene is open to more than one interpretation.
